Sweet Music (updated!)

Posted 23/10/2017

Brian Connolly - Lead singer of SweetBrian Connolly - Lead singer of SweetI am a lifelong Sweet fan. I love their music especially their own music, written and performed by them on their rock albums. If only things had been different....

I grew up with Glam Rock and I loved it. Born in 1964, I was still very much a sweet little girl when the 70s started and Bubblegum music hit the scene. I really enjoyed the vibrant and lively music that was easy to sing along with.

Then one day I was watching Top Of The Pops (back in those days there was very little choice of TV unlike now!) One of the bands featured was called The Sweet singing a very catchy little ditty called Funny Funny... I LOVED it!

I watched this band and especially the beautiful blonde lead singer and I was smitten! 7 years old and I was I LOVE! Thus began my lifelong love of Brian Connolly and the band The Sweet.

It was about 1970 I was bought my first record player for Christmas and I remember my parents buying the Top Of The Pops LP sung by session singers! At the time I didn't realise the difference until I heard that track sung by others, Funny Funny just wasn't the same and I begged them to get me the original single which they did. I was over the moon!

I had my record player and this single had a b-side. I decided to try that flipside and found a wonderful song You're Not Wrong For Loving Me. It was, well different. It was then I noticed the B-side was written by The Sweet. I liked it.

Soon I was waiting for the next song, hoping this band were not one hit wonders. Our weekly family visit to town on Saturday would see me race round to the local newsagent to check out the magazines and see if any of them featured The Sweet. I gathered up each week whet I could find and begged my mum to buy them, foregoing my weekly sweet supply! (I was lucky that I still got a few sweets though!).

The next song appeared, named Co-Co. This was an upbeat song again, with a heavier B-side Done Me Wrong Alright which I preferred! I loved this band already and still they were growing on me!

Next came Alexander Graham Bell, which funnily enough didn't do as well but I loved it, but the B-Side this time was fantastic, a song called Spotlight! Poppa Joe/Jeanie and Little Willy/Man From Mecca were OK, not my favourites but I still loved the band, and the lead singer even more.

then came Wig Wam Bam and by god did I LOVE this song! With a fab B-Side titled New York Connection they were back on top and they looked FABULOUS! Now they had an image that was spectacular, Glam Rock had arrived in style and they were really rockin' it!

And it was getting better - Blockbuster was their first and only number 1 in the UK and it was worth it. You can see the absolute joy in their faces when they preformed the song on Top Of The Pops. It is interesting to point out here that in Europe Sweet were absolutely HUGE and still are today.

The B-Side Need A Lot of Lovin' was also brilliant and became one of my top songs still to this day.

The hits continued, Hell Raiser/Burning - Ballroom Blitz/Rock n Roll Disgrace - Teenage Rampage/Own Up, Take A Look at Yourself, all made number 2 in the UK.

Then, as their music got harder, they started to drop off the mainstream popularity radar. They were by this time huge in Europe but they could not seem to get recognition in the UK. They finally were getting control of their own direction but it was stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Their next track The Six Teens/ Burn On The Flame could today be called a classic track and it managed to make the top 10, reaching a pretty respectable number 9. The b-side, Burn On The Flame became another of my all time favourite Sweet songs btw.

The next song called Turn It Down/Someone Else Will just kinda died off, a bit too much for many, it was just a bit out of place at the time. Og course I still bought it, I bought everything at the time!

Then they hit back with another track that would not only put them back to number 2 in the charts, it would in nearly 40 years time put them back on the radar. Fox On The Run was brilliant. Miss Demeanor was the B-side to this song and they were riding high again.

The follow up was Action/Sweet F.A. was the follow up was did OK I guess but again they started dropping out of the charts. The Lies In Your Eyes/Cockroach hovered again but didn't impact though again The Lies In Your Eyes was added to my fav Sweet track list. Lost Angels/Funk it Up went the same way and betime Fever Of Love/A Distinct Lack of Ancient and the follow up Stairway To The Stars/Why Don't You Do It To Me hardly made an impact in the UK.

Then, to everyone's amazemnt they again came back with a song called Love Is LiKe Oxygen/Cover Girl. The song again made it into the top 10, peaking at number 9 in the charts. The were older, more mature and the music was too.

Sweet after this were not to chart again in the UK.

It is sad to think that I was only 14 when the band split up and I never got to see them in the heyday! But who would think with Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, Sweet would find new life and a new audience when they awesome track Fox On The Run was used to promote the film! It even made number 1 in the download chart! All these new fans of their music was wonderful to see, the view counts going up on the YouTube videos, comments and more from old and new fans all saying the same thing....

They were totally underrated at the time they were big. But true fans new how talented they were musically. If only times had been different.....

Below are the original Sweet vinyl albums I have collected as far as I can remember! (I will update as I did these out of storage and post an image of the original albums!)

As I collected their singles, I also collected their albums. I enjoyed that their album music was heavier and had more substance that the singles and it is from Off The Record that my all time favourite Sweet song comes.

Take a listen to Windy City.......

And I have to finish with a few images of what was Brian Connolly at his best!

UPDATE - Sensational Sweet (Chapter One: The Wild Bunch) Box set

In November 2017 there is to be released a new boxed set featuring 9 albums by Sweet, including The Sweet at the BEEB which I have been trying to get for years. I have already pondered this box set.

AmazonUK link

As an absolute Sweet fan, I am over the moon about the release of this set. Even though I have some of these discs (vinyl & cd versions), the fact that this is a boxed set of all their material during they hayday years of the band make it totally worth it! It is the type of thing a fan buys even though they have everything already because they are a fan. I evwen have my unopened copy of Fox On The Run (Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 trailer theme) 12" yellow vinyl release.

Now there was another boxed set released not so long ago, Are You ready, and this was a vinyl release but it was of the original albums without the reissue extra tracks etc. I already own all their original albums!

This new boxed set, as far as I am concerned is a dream for most Sweet fans.
